Our Board

Buller High School Board Chairperson - Glenn Irving

koutou katoa. Nau mai ki te Kura Tuarua o Kawatiri.

Welcome to the Buller High School website.  I have the privilege of leading the Buller High School Board of Trustees, as its Chair.

The Board of Trustees consists of the Principal, parent representatives, (who are elected by parents every three years), and staff and student representatives who are also elected. We are required by the Education and Training Act 2020 to ensure that all our students are able to attain the highest possible standard of educational achievement.
To do this, we set the strategic direction of the school, monitor the school’s performance in raising educational achievement, and ensure the school’s compliance with various legislative and policy requirements.

As the only secondary school in Westport, we work very hard to ensure that the education we provide will equip our students with the skills they will need for their adult lives, in a world that is rapidly changing.
Student wellbeing is critical to student achievement, so pastoral care is a key area of the business of the school.  We have articulated this through the Buller High Way, including the “Four Rs”:

  • Relationships – Whanaungatanga
  • Respect – Manaakitanga
  • Responsibility – Kawenga
  • Resilience – Manahau

We strive to recognise and celebrate the potential and individuality of all our students and are proud of their many achievements.  The goal is always for students to do the best they can, and what success looks like will vary from student to student.  Whether it is representing New Zealand in a particular area, which a number of our students have done, or a more modest but equally valuable achievement.

To succeed, a school has to be responsive to the needs of students, and their families.  Feedback from our students and families is always welcome and is sought throughout the year, both formally and informally.

The success of our students is a partnership between students, the school, and their families.  We warmly welcome you on your journey through Buller High School.
