Mathematics Dept

The Maths Department offers courses from Year 9 through to Year 13. Our overall aim is to provide students with the Numeracy and Mathematical skills that they will need to succeed in the fast-changing future. We aspire to inclusively meet the needs of all students, delivering individual learning pathways aligned to their career choices.

Support is also provided outside the class with Maths club and individual tuition drop-in sessions.

Gifted and Talented students have the opportunity to be challenged through internationally recognized competitions.

The Junior Curriculum:

Our aim is to consolidate the skills learnt in Primary School (NZC Level 3 / 4) and bring most students up to National Curriculum Level 5 by the end of year 10. They will have the opportunity to be challenged by new topics. They will hone their problem solving and analytical skills for future careers Maths in the junior school covers three main strands:
  • Number and Measurement
  • Algebra and Shape – including patterns and trigonometry
  • Statistics – including statistical literacy and probability
Students will be invited to participate in National and Australasian Maths Competitions with more opportunities planned.

 The Senior Curriculum:

The senior curriculum is moving to mixed ability. This will give all students the opportunity to excel in all areas of Mathematics. Courses offered will be at NCEA level 1 (NZC 6) to level 3. Level 2 and Level 3 are optional.

Areas covered will be:

  • Numeracy
  • Algebra – including patterns and trigonometry
  • Geometry – including measure and properties of shapes
  • Statistics – including analysis of data and probability

Courses in Y11 will lead with effort and success to Y12 and Y13 and potentially university.
